When we had our home inspection, we discovered there were high radon levels in the basement, over twice the amount of safe levels a house should have, according to EPA standards. Although this frightened us quite a bit, we did our research and found this to be an easy fix by having a radon reduction system installed. Here is a great resource we found: EPA link
The fear of radon is this: there have been direct links of long term exposure causing lung cancer. We've heard high radon levels are very common in our part of the city. The map below shows various radon levels across the state.

As part of our contract, the sellers had this installed. It's currently sitting in our basement and exits directly outside the house.
The new system was tested this past Saturday and the results came back today. The radon levels were significantly lower, but slightly above the safe level (4pCi/L). This was definitely a bummer. We've decided that there is no need to hang Christmas lights outside because our house is glowing on its own! All joking aside, this is serious in the long term. Our radon specialist will be adjusting the system and taking a new reading soon. This is not suppose to affect our closing this Wednesday, but let's keep our fingers crossed!
